Before You Contact Us

Know when advice can wait and when action cannot.

The DIA Helpdesk can support you with professional advice, but it should never delay urgent safeguarding action. What you do next depends on the level of concern and whether someone may be at immediate risk.

Immediate Danger

Call 999

If you believe someone is in immediate danger or there is an emergency requiring police, ambulance or other emergency assistance, contact the emergency services straight away.

Safeguarding Concern

Seek appropriate safeguarding support

If someone may be at risk but there is no immediate emergency, you may need to contact the relevant local safeguarding service, police or other appropriate authority depending on the circumstances.

Professional Advice

Talk to the DIA Helpdesk

If you need help understanding your professional responsibilities, a complaint, boundaries or what steps may be appropriate, DIA can help you think through the situation.

Contact the Helpdesk
01 Listen calmly. Allow the person to explain what they need to say.
02 Do not promise secrecy. You may need to share information appropriately.
03 Record the facts. Keep an accurate, secure record of what was said or observed.
04 Do not investigate. Do not confront people involved or try to establish the facts yourself.
If you are unsure, seek advice, but do not delay necessary action. DIA can support your professional decision-making, but responsibility for making an appropriate safeguarding referral remains separate from the Helpdesk service.
