Successful candidates who have completed examiner training are sitting idle at home near test centres with long queues, instead of being deployed (and are considering other jobs now, so long has their wait been to even start the job of helping to bring wait times down).
Emails to DIA from applicants, trainees, and those who have successfully passed Examiner training (and also a Reddit thread specifically centred on Examiner recruitment) reveal:
- Applicants successfully completing their driving and other assessments, but being informed they won’t commence training until 6 months after that
- Those who have successfully completed training waiting more than 4 months to be deployed and now considering taking other jobs as they have been given no information on a likely start date
- Accounts of stressful and demotivating experiences within the training process from trainees who subsequently dropped out of training as a result, contributing to the high attrition rate the agency has experienced throughout its examiner recruitment efforts
When our CEO Carly met with senior management at the agency last month she raised this issue and it was acknowledged by Directors that there had been a lag in deploying new examiners. However, we were assured they were getting on top of the issue. This month we’ve received further intel that suggests the lag continues. We’ve asked DVSA for an update.

What happens when students pass the 2 year limit through no fault of their own? Whilst the DVLA keep having meetings other peoples lives are being ruined!!
Applicants need to go to work, buses are useless, trains are cancelled more than they run.
It will encourage illegal driving and it will be the incompetence of the test system!!
I live in the East Midlands and did use Loughborough DTC ( I was actually employed there 6 years ago as an examiner before leaving to return to instructing)
There is currently one full time examiner and an examiner that does lorries and cars.
They recently promoted an examiner to manager and he has responsibility for Loughborough and melton Mowbray a non permanent centre.
They have had numerous new faces yet no one has stayed .
Why have they a full time manager ??
All of this is wrong and we are being forced to take students to test centres way away from normal costing them more and us more.
Yet despite continuous questioning the same response is we have people ready and about to go on the course .
When I worked there we had 5 examiners
There was always a promise of capacity for 10
