The Driving Instructors Association (DIA) is calling on all Potential Driving Instructors (PDIs) and Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) to join an exciting new pilot scheme aimed at transforming learner driver training in the UK. Milestones, backed by the Department for Transport, RAC Foundation and TRL, offers an innovative approach to driver education, designed to highlight and reduce risk for new drivers.
This groundbreaking research seeks to evaluate a modular training programme, combining in-car and online learning, to help learners manage driving risks effectively once licensed. Milestones is recruiting ADIs to participate in this trial, offering free access to training resources, CPD opportunities, and assessment tools.

What the Project Offers
- Free Training and CPD: ADIs will gain access to resources and tools designed to enhance their teaching and help learners address key driving risks.
- Online Learning for Pupils: Learners involved will benefit from free e-learning and assessment materials, focused on key risk areas.
- Unique Opportunities for Trainers: This project gives ADIs a chance to actively shape future driver training and assessments.
- Discounted Insurance & Apps: Learners can access discounts and a young driver app to track driving progress and earn rewards for safe driving.

How It Works
ADIs and their pupils (aged 17-24) will be placed into one of three groups:
- Full in-car and online training.
- In-car training only.
- A control group with traditional learning methods.
The trial will measure the impact of these approaches on improving driving knowledge and reducing risk.
Why you should come on the Milestones journey
As a driver trainer, you’re passionate about improving road safety and reducing accidents involving young drivers. Therefore, DIA is excited to invite you to become part of a groundbreaking research project which will trial a new kind of learning journey for all potential new drivers.
Quite simply, the Milestones project seeks to evaluate whether having Learner drivers undertake a modular training programme, where they follow a prescribed programme of learning in-car and online, working towards specific learning milestones (centred on the key areas of novice driver risk) has a positive impact in terms of improving their understanding of key driving risks – and their ability to manage those risks once licensed and driving independently.
Supported by the Department for Transport, DVSA and a number of key road safety stakeholders, the Milestones project is a unique initiative with the potential to transform learning to drive in the UK.
We are looking for ADIs to volunteer to participate in this important trial, both in helping us to recruit pupils for the trial, and also in helping to deliver the in-car training and assessment element of the research (for which we will provide full guidance and training/assessment resources).
By participating in the Milestones project, you have the potential to play a key role in the evolution of driver training and help improve novice driver outcomes.
