DVSA has completed the first live trial of its new Driver Services Platform, which will eventually replace the current practical driving test booking system.
The small-scale trial involved 14 learners taking car tests at Durham Driving Test Centre across two days in July. DVSA used the trial to test four key areas:
- Payments
- Test bookings
- Scheduling
- Integration with the app used by driving examiners
Local ADIs helped DVSA recruit test-ready pupils for the trial. Eleven instructors volunteered, providing a pool of 36 learners from which the final participants were selected.
DVSA said the trial produced encouraging results. Bookings appeared correctly on examiners’ tablets, test outcomes were shared with DVLA and full licences were issued promptly to successful candidates.
However, the trial required considerable manual work behind the scenes. DVSA’s next priority is to automate more of the process, including taking payments and allowing customers to select test dates.
The Driver Services Platform remains in the early stages of development and further testing will be required before it can be introduced more widely.
Car tests are the initial focus, with instructor, motorcycle and vocational tests expected to move to the platform at a later stage. DVSA has not announced a date for the wider rollout.
