nationally accredited course.
Driver and Rider Trainers work in a position of trust. Safeguarding knowledge and professional boundaries matter. For driving instructors, the updated DVSA Code of Practice makes those expectations clearer than ever.
A nationally accredited Level 3 safeguarding qualification gives Driver and Rider Trainers the broader professional foundation to recognise concerns, understand responsibilities and respond appropriately.
Safeguarding rarely arrives labelled as safeguarding.
It may be something a pupil tells you, a change you notice or a professional boundary that starts to feel unclear. The important part is recognising when something needs your attention and knowing what to do next.
What might it look like?
A conversation becomes a disclosure or raises a concern about their safety or wellbeing.
You notice a change in behaviour, confidence or circumstances that gives you cause for concern.
Personal messages, conversations, social media or contact outside lessons start to cross a line.
You need to know whether to record a concern, seek advice or follow a safeguarding route.
Recognise concerns, understand your responsibilities and know when to seek help. You are not there to investigate abuse or solve someone's personal circumstances.
For Driver and Rider Trainers, start at Level 3.
Awareness training can introduce the subject, but the professional foundation needs to go further. For those working directly with pupils in a position of trust, the benchmark should be no less than a nationally accredited Level 3 safeguarding qualification.
These levels may be useful as an introduction to safeguarding, but they should not be treated as an alternative to the broader knowledge and professional development provided by Level 3.
Level 3 Safeguarding
Build the broader knowledge needed to recognise safeguarding concerns, understand your responsibilities, maintain appropriate professional boundaries and respond appropriately when a difficult situation arises.
DIA. Serious about Safeguarding.
The updated Code of Practice has brought safeguarding into sharper focus across the profession. For DIA, this is not a new subject.
DIA has been actively delivering safeguarding advice and training for Driver and Rider Trainers for nearly a decade, while lobbying for safeguarding to form part of PDI training and ongoing professional development.
DIA was the first national association and training body in the sector to establish a recognised safeguarding training route, delivered at a level appropriate to the risks trainers and pupils may encounter in everyday practice.
DIA supports ADIs through safeguarding and professional conduct matters, including DVSA investigations, removals and tribunals, and contributes industry insight to safeguarding policy, process and procedure.
