New research has uncovered a dramatic shift in the methods criminals use to steal vehicles, with almost two-thirds of all thefts now involving the manipulation of remote locking signals.
Experts at RTA Law analysed data from the Office for National Statistics and found that between April 2023 and March 2024, a staggering 58% of vehicle thefts involved offenders using technology to intercept or manipulate the signal from a remote locking device.
This represents a fourfold increase from April 2018 to March 2019, when just 13% of thefts were carried out this way.
How the Technology Works Against You
Signal manipulation involves intercepting, copying, amplifying, or replaying the wireless signal sent between a vehicle’s key fob and its security system. Criminals can achieve this without ever touching the actual key, using readily available devices to either boost or mimic the signal.
Common tactics include:
- Relay attacks – where the signal from your key is extended to the car using relay boxes
- Signal jamming – which blocks the locking signal so the car remains unlocked;
- Replay attacks – where a previously captured signal is used to unlock the vehicle;
- Signal cloning – creating a copy of your key’s digital signature.
Theft Methods: How the Numbers Have Changed
Between April 2023 and March 2024, signal manipulation accounted for 58% of all thefts – by far the most prevalent method.
The second most common method, albeit significantly less frequent, was the use of a physical key or electric fob. This accounted for just 18% of thefts, a steep drop from 33% in 2018–2019.
Forcing a lock was the third most common entry method, making up 13% of cases.
Other methods saw smaller figures:
- Doors left unlocked and ‘other’ methods both accounted for 5%;
- Breaking a window made up 4% of entries;
- Windows left open and physically forcing or bending the door were almost non-existent, each at 0%
Expert View: “We Must Stay One Step Ahead”
Rod Mitchell of RTA Law, who led the data analysis, described the trend as “shocking” and a reflection of how technology is both a benefit and a vulnerability.
“The change in entry mirrors the advancement in technology in the motor industry. As technology changes, so does the way criminals pry on people and their possessions,” he said.
“It really shows that we always need to be thinking one step ahead when technological advances take place to keep ourselves and our belongings safe.”

1. Use a Signal-Blocking Device
“Invest in a quality Faraday pouch or signal-blocking container. These block the electromagnetic signals from your key, making it virtually impossible for criminals to perform a relay attack. Simply placing your key inside when not in use significantly reduces the risk of unauthorised access.”
2. Store Keys Away from Doors and Windows
“Don’t leave your keys near your front door or window. Thieves often try to detect and capture the key’s signal from outside the property. Keeping your keys further inside your home creates a barrier and reduces their chances of success.”
3. Disable or Secure Keyless Entry When Possible
“If your car allows it, consider switching off keyless entry – especially overnight or in high-risk areas. Where disabling isn’t an option, physical security devices such as steering locks or immobilisers can provide a strong deterrent even if the signal is compromised.”
