November’s proving to be a busy month already with several meetings with DVSA and Department for Transport to discuss key topics and issues in driver and rider training and wider road safety.
In particular, work has been ongoing to try and assist the B+E training industry who are facing a major challenge with the removal of a requirement for an additional B+E test. We’ve been working closely with the National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA) to develop a new training and assessment framework which could work to fill the gap left by the withdrawal of the statutory testing provision previously delivered by DVSA – watch this space for more on these developments. On the lobbying front our CEO Carly is also drafting (a somewhat last ditch) letter to MPs encouraging them to think carefully about their vote next week on the removal of a requirement for car drivers to take an additional test and the road safety implications of such, this letter will shortly be shared with NASP members and NTTA members for them to similarly send to their local MP.
As the driver and rider training industry representative on the Department for Transport’s Road Safety Delivery Group DIA has also been involved in important discussions about road safety policy and strategy, and ensuring driver and rider trainer voices are heard in the formation of new policy and strategy – we’ll fill you in on that evolving new road safety strategy and framework (and any impacts for driver and rider education) soon.
We also attended a meeting with DVSA to discuss ongoing developments to the theory test booking process, and the delivery of theory tests, in terms of the support which can be given to candidates with specific needs which gave us the chance to review ongoing work and give feedback on behalf of trainers and pupils which can hopefully be incorporated into future developments.
Lastly you’ll note below NASP met last week with DVSA to discuss several key topics related driver trainer regulation, the progress of the agency’s pandemic recovery plans etc. Read the full report and let us know your thoughts, any further issues/questions etc you would like us to raise with DVSA.
