Learners and the emergency services – where do we go next?

Gareth joined South Wales Police in 1990, and the Traffic department in 1995 as a car driver. Seven years later he joined the force driver training unit as a car and motorcycle trainer where he remains today as the unit manager. Gareth is the only dual trained class 1 Police driver training manager in Wales. His specialist subject is VIP escort duties and training, and he is due to start work with the Omani royal guard later this year.
 



Pete Mowat

Pete’s main responsibilities are to assist the CDE/DCDE in all matters related to road safety, together with operational and management control of all aspects of driver testing. He leads on quality assurance of statutory and non-statutory activities in the South West, reporting directly to DSA Headquarters in Nottingham, and provides advice to internal branches and external bodies on operational matters.
 



Paul Capon

Paul has worked within the Lloyds Banking Group for over 23 years, going from a cashier with the Halifax to Branch then Area Manager. He worked for five years as a training manager then moved to the Bank of Scotland on the business side of the operation. He is now with Lloyds TSB where he responsible for bringing in new business to the bank.
  



Julian Smith

Dealing with post traumatic stress disorder

Julian is the managing director of his own company, Ride Drive Ltd, which operates with a team of specialised advanced driver and motorcycle rider trainers all over the UK. Julian spent 22 years as a traffic patrol police officer, where he attended and passed many advanced police driving courses. “Ride Drive gives me the opportunity to put right what is so lacking among civilian drivers – providing high-grade skills to ordinary members of the public,” he says.
 



Tony Baker

Tony is an ADI and fleet trainer specialising in speed awareness and drink driver training to help offender rehabilitation. He holds various driving and training qualifications and specialises in speed awareness training, delivering courses on behalf of Kent, Essex and the Metropolitan Police via their designated training providers. His previous experience includes the pub industry, first as a pub owner, then Area Manager and subsequently as national trainer for a major pub company.
 



David Penny

Occupational road risk

David has been involved in the fleet industry since 1991 serving in a variety of roles. In 2003 he was approached to head up the consultancy department of Fleetrisk24 Ltd. Since that time he has acted as senior consultant as well as serving on the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety. David’s clients include Christian Salveson, BAE Systems, Sara Lee, National Australia Bank and the Driving Instructors Association, to name but a few.
