Who is to blame?
ENFORCEMENT, ENGINEERING AND EDUCATION -
are the three tools used to improve road safety
ENFORCEMENT - CAN WE BLAME THE POLICE?
It could be easy to blame the Police because we have so many accidents on our roads. They are actually doing a magnificent job enforcing our laws, patrolling our streets and keeping us safe on the road. We must support their efforts to persuade drivers to be more aware and considerate on our roads.
ENGINEERING - CAN WE BLAME THE ENGINEERS?
We could target our anger at the traffic engineers who plan our highways, provide crash barriers, give us light at night and a myriad of safety systems to protect us when we drive.
Our vehicle manufacturers too provide us with an ever increasing range of safety features. It is hard to imagine there should be any death at all on our roads.
EDUCATION - CAN WE BLAME URSELVES?
The fact that over 85% of all traffic accidents are caused solely by driver or rider error. Little, if any, further training is ever taken by majority of drivers after passing the basic "L" test.
