Becoming a Driving Instructor

So you're thinking of becoming a driving instructor.

Possibly you have seen some advertisements in a national or local paper, about how you can earn apparently high hourly tuition fees, for not much more than being a passenger while someone else does the driving.

Possibly you have seen an advertisement for a franchise, where you have 'the backing' of a large instructional organisation, but where you might have to pay a substantial franchise fee.

Possibly you see becoming a driving instructor as some kind of soft option, where scores of learner drivers pay you to be told when to use their indicators.

Well, the truth isn't quite so rosy. It isn't particulary easy to become a driving instructor. The pass rate for the Government's final or part 3 instructional examination is currently less than 32%.

And if you do qualify, it isn't necessarily certain there will be enough work in your locality for you to earn a living anyway.

On the other hand it is possible to succeed as a driving instructor, to make a reasonable living for yourself and perhaps even open up a driving school with an office.

But there are many pitfalls to overcome, many disreputable companies and organisations who would like to take your money in return for training which will not leave you adequately prepared for the various tests you will have to pass.

If you contact us we can supply you with a pack full of information on becoming a driving instructor, a list of ORDIT qualified ADI trainers, as well as further information on the benefits on joining the world's largest professional driver training association. The cost of this pack is £3.99 plus postage.

The DIA is an organisation of and for professional driving instructors. It is an independent organisation which exists to promote and protect the interests of driving instructors. If you are thinking of becoming a driving instructor it will be very much in your interests to join the DIA.
